Photography is a powerful and ever-evolving medium of creative expression, storytelling, and communication. For
post-16 learners, studying photography can open up a range of artistic and professional opportunities. Learners can
begin their journey at different entry points depending on their prior experience, con昀椀dence, and academic background.
Photography quali昀椀cations are available at Levels 1, 2 and 3, each offering a structured route into the subject while
developing practical, creative, and technical skills. This course is aimed at learners who are pursuing a career in the
creative industries.
The Level 1 quali昀椀cation is aimed at learners who are new to photography or have limited prior knowledge of the
subject. It’s often a one-year introductory course designed to build basic camera skills, introduce simple editing
techniques, and develop an understanding of visual language. Learners typically learn how to use a digital camera,
explore composition, lighting, and perspective, and experiment with creative approaches to image-making. Alongside
this, they gain experience using editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.

Photography Level 1, 2 and 3
At Level 2, learners begin to take a more focused and in-depth approach to photography. This quali昀椀cation is suitable
for learners who have completed Level 1 or have some previous experience and a keen interest in developing their
skills. Learners explore a broader range of photographic genres, including portrait, landscape, documentary, and studio
photography.
They also start to develop a personal style, learn about photographers and artists who in昀氀uence the industry, and build
a portfolio of work. Technical knowledge is expanded through lessons in manual camera settings, lighting setups,
image editing, and professional presentation techniques. There is a strong emphasis on planning and re昀氀ecting on
creative work, helping learners to think more critically about their images.
At Level 3, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of photographic practice, including analogue and digital
processes, critical theory, project management, and professional presentation. Learners will work on complex, selfdirected projects, develop a professional-standard portfolio, and often exhibit their work publicly. They will also
learn how to respond to client briefs and explore career pathways within photography, media, and the wider creative
industries.
Our facilities are industry standard with one of the only traditional darkrooms in the region with 12 Durst workstations
and full development facilities. Learners can develop black and white and colour 昀椀lm and produce black and white
prints utilising traditional developing techniques and processes.
