Higher National Certificate
Programme Overview
This programme provides a solid technical and academic foundation in
engineering, developing the knowledge, analytical skills and professional
behaviours required for modern industry. You will explore key areas such
as Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Design, Quality and Process
Control, Industry 4.0 and Production Engineering. Delivery can be tailored
to suit subject specialisms or a particular pathway, consisting of a blend
of subjects both unique and common to different engineering disciplines.
For example; Thermodynamics, Operations and Plant Management or
Electrical Systems and Fault Finding. All are supported through access to
industry-standard equipment and software. Learning is delivered through
a blend of lectures, practical workshops and employer-informed projects
designed to mirror real engineering environments and expectations. By
the end of the programme, you will have the confidence and competence
to progress academically or professionally within the engineering sector.
Entry Requirements
Minimum 80 UCAS points, ideally including a Level 3 qualification in
Engineering, Maths or a related technical subject. Relevant industry
experience may also be considered.
What Can I Do When I Finish?
The HNC supports progression into roles such as Engineering
Technician, Process Technician, CAD Designer, Maintenance Engineer,
Manufacturing Technician, Quality Control Technician, or equivalent
industry positions. Many learners use the HNC as a pathway into higherlevel qualifications, progressing to the Higher National Diploma (HND) in
Engineering, degree-level study, or specialist engineering training aligned
to local manufacturing, fabrication, automation and maintenance needs.
