Higher National Diploma
Programme Overview
Building on the HNC, this programme develops advanced theoretical
understanding and applied technical competence across a broader
range of engineering disciplines. You will deepen your knowledge through
units such as advanced design and analysis, fluid and thermodynamic
principles, electrical and electronic systems, project management,
manufacturing processes and digital engineering, lean manufacturing and
sustainability. Your learning is supported by SWDT’s extensive specialist
engineering facilities and modern equipment. Teaching integrates theory,
technical skill development and industry-informed project work, preparing
you for higher-level technician and associate engineering roles.
Entry Requirements
A completed Level 4 Engineering HNC or equivalent qualification in a
related engineering discipline. Applicants should also demonstrate strong
analytical and problem-solving skills suitable for higher-level study.
What Can I Do When I Finish?
Graduates progress into roles such as Engineering Associate, Design
Engineer, Project Technician, Process Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer,
Maintenance Supervisor, or similar positions within engineering and
advanced manufacturing. Many learners also advance to degreelevel (Level 6) top up engineering programmes, higher technical
apprenticeships, or employer-led professional development such as
Incorporated Engineer pathways.
